Arlington ISD names new lone finalist for superintendent

Dr. Matt Smith from Belton ISD was named the lone finalist for the district’s superintendent position Tuesday.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Arlington ISD named Dr. Matt Smith from Belton ISD as the lone finalist for the district’s superintendent on Tuesday. 

Michelle Cavazos, from Gregory-Portland ISD, withdrew her candidacy for the position back in May after she was previously named the district’s lone finalist for superintendent.

Dr. Steven Wurtz was named interim superintendent in June upon the retirement of former superintendent Dr. Marcelo Cavazos.

Smith served as Chief of Staff and Chief Academic Officer in Leander ISD prior to joining Belton ISD, per Belton ISD’s website. Throughout his career, he’s also served as principal, executive director of secondary education, chief academic officer and superintendent.

Smith holds a doctorate in School Leadership from Concordia University - Chicago, a master's degree in education administration and supervision from Arizona State University, and a bachelor's degree from Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk, Virginia.

"His dedication to student achievement, innovative educational practices and fostering collaborative environments align seamlessly with Arlington ISD's vision for the future," said Arlington ISD board of trustees president Melody Fowler in a statement. “We know he will be a transformative leader and a great asset to the Arlington community.”

"Arlington ISD has a storied history in Texas public schools, and I am truly humbled and grateful that the Board of Trustees welcomed me to the team. With students, staff, parents, and the community, we will build on Arlington ISD's foundation of excellence for a thriving future,” Smith added. “Together, with this wonderful team, we will do amazing things for our students, and I cannot wait to get started."

Texas law requires a 21-day waiting period before the lone finalist is officially hired. Smith is scheduled to sign his contract on Monday, Jan. 8, 2024.
