Arlington ISD superintendent announces retirement

"It has been a true joy to lead the Arlington ISD for 11 years," Superintendent Marcelo Cavazos said.

ARLINGTON, Texas — It’s official: Yet another superintendent has decided to retire from a North Texas school district.

On Thursday, Arlington Independent School District Superintendent Marcelo Cavazos announced he’s retiring after serving 11 years as the district’s top leader.

In a news release, the district said Cavazos will leave Aug. 31, 2023.

Cavazos has worked in public education for over 30 years, the district listed some highlights from his work: improving test scores, implementing innovative programs and initiatives and making free pre-K for all 4-year-olds.

Cavazos even created the nation’s first district-wide STEM curriculum for 4-year-olds in pre-K.

"We are so happy for Cavazos while at the same time understanding the enormous loss to our community," Melody Fowler, president, Arlington ISD Board of Trustees said in part. "He has been an outstanding leader. He is revered here in our district and nationwide, too.”

Over his career Cavazos has been recognized for Superintendent of the Year in Texas, spearheading two bond issues in support of building new facilities, and fostering partnerships with colleges and sports teams, including the Dallas Cowboys.

"It has been a true joy to lead the Arlington ISD for 11 years," Cavazos said. "I've seen thousands of students realize their dreams and aspirations because of the opportunities our district and community provide. I witness our teachers and staff demonstrate love for our students every day and even more during difficult times. I love our staff and students, our community and our district. Choosing to retire was a difficult and emotional decision but I know it's the right decision. I also know our district is in capable hands."

"We have big shoes to fill, and we know it," Fowler said. "He has had a tremendous impact on our students, staff and our community and he will be greatly missed."

Since November 2021, over a dozen North Texas superintendents have announced their retirement plans, including Dallas, Fort Worth and Plano ISDs. Most recently, McKinney ISD Superintendent Dr. Rick McDaniel and Sunnyvale ISD Superintendent Doug Williams announced their plans to retire.

Several positions have been filled.

Fowler said that the Arlington Board of Trustees will begin its search for a new superintendent soon.
