Best players available for Dallas Cowboys in Day 2 of NFL Draft

The Dallas Cowboys didn't have a first-round pick, but they will begin selecting their 2019 draft class with pick No. 58. Here are some names to keep in mind

DALLAS — The first round of the NFL Draft has come and gone. With it, there were 32 players selected with none of them heading to the home team. Day Two has arrived, and it is now time for the Dallas Cowboys to get involved with a pick in both the second and third rounds.

Despite being forced to sit out the festivities after swapping the 27th overall selection to the Oakland Raiders for Amari Cooper last October, overall, things couldn’t have gone much better for the Cowboys. After all, even though Dallas hasn't been given the opportunity to select a new young player of their own as of yet, there's a lot of talent still left in the pool.

Indeed the Cowboys were able to solve any jonesing for a card being turned into the Commissioner with a tweet adopting their oft-pushed idea that Cooper was in fact their first round pick anyway:

The Cowboys get to do it for real later Friday night and there are a lot of prospects available that many expected to be gone in the first round.

One of those players is CB Byron Murphy of Washington. With 25 selections to go before Dallas makes their first pick, Murphy should be gone before they get a chance to select him to help out their secondary. However, if he continues to slide, the team should be looking to make a few calls to move up to get him or anyone else high on their board who they might target earlier in the second round.

Other notable defensive backs to consider are Taylor Rapp, Juan Thornhill, Greedy Williams, Rock Ya-Sin, and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson. The Cowboys are known to need some help in the secondary to keep up with the pass-happy teams that they will be facing in the coming years.

Also considering that NFC East division rivals New York and Washington both went with young quarterbacks in the top half of the first round. The Cowboys need to find a way to take the ball away and someone from the above group of players could start that trend for the team.

Offensively, there are a few players to consider on Day Two with TE Irv Smith Jr. out of Alabama still available. Many felt Smith could sneak into the first round but now Dallas has an opportunity to get a big-time pass catcher at a position where the future appears wide open, should they opt for offense with pick 58 or sooner if they trade up.

South Carolina wideout Deebo Samuel is still in the running for the Cowboys which would give Dallas and Dak Prescott another playmaking weapon. Also, the Cowboys could make a move for a player the caliber of WR D.K. Metcalf from Ole Miss, who slid right into second round territory.

Another viable option the team could decide on, should the dominos fall their way, is to find pass rush help with their first pick. Boston College’s Zach Allen could be the target for Dallas at 58. A pass rusher would become especially viable if the rumors surrounding a move that could involve former 2017 first-round selection Taco Charlton comes to fruition. Allen would make sense with the need for depth behind both Tank Lawrence and Robert Quinn at the ends.

When looking at the players who could be in the running as the Cowboys’ first selection of the 2019 NFL Draft, it is important to find someone who can step in immediately. The Cowboys likely won't be looking to take on too much risk after skipping the first round altogether.

Most likely, the least risky area remaining on the board comes from a defensive back or a skill position like a wide receiver. The decision for Dallas shouldn’t be difficult with so many worthy prospects still available.
