Surviving victim of Frisco shooting 'strong young man and will persevere,' family says

"Everything is changed now for all of us. It's never going to be the same again," said Morgan Lowe, the victim's sister.

FRISCO, Texas — Family tells WFAA that Zachary Lowe, 20, was walking home from a night shift at Walmart near Preston Road and Hickory Street in Frisco when he was shot.

Lowe is the second victim in a puzzling shooting last Wednesday night Frisco Police has called "random."

Dung Doan did not survive his injuries and Zachary Lowe is currently being treated at Texas Health Presbyterian in Plano. Morgan Lowe recalls the chilling phone call she got from her brother Zachary right after he was shot twice.

"He sounded really panicked. It was a tone of the voice I had never heard from him before. He said, 'Help! I've been shot and I need you to come right now,'" recalled Morgan Lowe.

The Doans and Lowes both live across the street from Walmart at the Old Hickory Square Apartments but do not know each other.

Family tells WFAA a man approached Zachary demanding money and cigarettes. Zachary gave his wallet before he was shot.

"Everything is changed now...for all of us. It's never going to be the same again," said the victim's sister.

The Lowes believe Dung Doan, who was walking nearby, re-directed the shooter's attention giving Zach the chance to run.

"What he did was save my son's life," said father Denny Lowe.

Family says Lowe was a former Army private who was well-loved by co-workers at Walmart. The family says the day of the shooting, he was celebrated at work for serving his country.

"He's strong. He's a strong young man and he will persevere," said his father.

It is unclear how long Lowe will be in the hospital. He turns 21 years old next week and the family is hopeful he can return home before Thanksgiving.

"We had plans to go out for his 21st birthday...go out to dinner and everything," said Morgan Lowe.

The gunman has not been arrested. Frisco police are sifting through surviellance videos and asking for the public's help. The family had the following message for the man who shot and Doan and Lowe.

"Turn yourself in and accept your punishment, whatever that may be," said Denny Lowe.

The family has organized a funding campaign to help with unexpected expenses.  Lowe was not full-time and did not have full benefits at work. The family is worried that Zachary Lowe will be out of work for a long while and will be delayed in paying medical and rental bills.
