What's wind chill?! Explaining the cold winds, even lower temperatures moving into North Texas

Meteorologists often use a 'wind chill' to describe what it feels like when a strong, cold wind moves in.

DALLAS — The wind chill is how cold it feels when the wind is taken into consideration.

How many times have you stepped outside on a cold day and said, "It is not so bad out here, but the wind!"

That is the wind chill. It can make bearable days just about miserable and even dangerous!

That is why a Wind Chill Advisory is in place for North Texas Thursday through Friday morning as the coldest air of 2022 settles in.

Why it matters:
The cold wind chills could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken.

 How does it happen?

The human body loses heat through convection. This heat generally stays close to the skin. That layer of warmth is used to keep the body warm.

When the wind picks up, that layer of warmth is whisked away and no longer insulating the body. The stronger the wind, the quicker it removes that layer of warmth. If the wind is very cold and strong, the body's heat loss is sped up.

That is why it is important to cover exposed skin. The jackets, hats and gloves keep that layer of insulation the human body naturally creates close to the body.
