WFAA to locally broadcast 10 of the Dallas Mavericks’ remaining 2023-2024 NBA regular season games

These games being broadcast on WFAA means 7 million people in the Dallas-Fort Worth market will now be able to watch the Mavs play for free over the air

DALLAS — It just got a whole lot easier to watch certain Mavs games here in North Texas!

In press releases issued on Tuesday morning, WFAA’s parent company TEGNA and the Dallas Mavericks jointly announced a partnership in which 10 Mavericks games will air on WFAA in March and April.

This is in addition to three more Mavericks games already announced to be airing on WFAA as part of the NBA on ABC calendar for the remainder of the 2023-2024 NBA regular season.

As a result, Mavericks fans across Dallas-Fort Worth will now be able to watch 13 over-the-air games for free in the span of 11 weeks.

According to TEGNA’s press release, the 10 additional games now being broadcast on WFAA means 3 million area households — and more than 7 million total people in the Dallas-Fort Worth market — will be able to watch Mavs play for free and over the air via WFAA and its partnerships with cable, satellite and streaming service providers.

Those games would’ve previously aired exclusively on cable — and only through certain providers

Earlier this year, however, the NBA and Diamond Sports Group, amid a fast-changing broadcast media landscape, reached an agreement allowing teams to join with local broadcasters for a limited number of over-the-air games throughout the remainder of the 2023-2024 regular season.

The 10 games added to the WFAA schedule will no longer be available on Bally Sports Southwest’s cable channels. All other regular season Mavericks games will continue to air and be streamed by Bally Sports Southwest or by the NBA’s national media partners as previously scheduled.

The 13 combined Mavericks games now slated to air on WFAA throughout the rest of the season will see star players Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving taking on the likes of the Jayson Tatum-led, NBA East-leading Boston Celtics (Mar. 1); reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers (Mar. 3); the two-time MPV Steph Curry-led Golden State Warriors (Mar. 13 and Apr. 5);  and two-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets (Mar. 17), among others.

Mavs fans will be pleased to know that longtime Mavericks play-by-play announcer Mark Followill will continue to call the newly scheduled WFAA games. He will be joined, as usual, by color commentator Jeff “Skin” Wade, as well as Mavericks legends and broadcast analysts Derek Harper and Devin Harris. WFAA’s Emmy award-winning sports team of Joe Trahan, Mike Leslie and Jonah Javad is also anticipated to contribute to the broadcasts.

“Providing access to games has always been our top priority,” Dallas Mavericks CEO Cynt Marshall said in a statement about the new partnership. “We are thrilled to work with WFAA to bring more fun and excitement to all of our MFFLs across North Texas.”

Added Brad Ramsey, senior vice president of media operations for TEGNA, and president and general manager of WFAA: “We are very proud to partner with the Dallas Mavericks, and to make these important late-season games available to every fan, and every household, in North Texas. As WFAA celebrates 75 years, we’ve long been the home for live, local sports and local sports fans and we look forward to cheering on the Mavs right alongside their fans and our viewers.”
