Mattress fire engulfs tractor-trailer, backs up traffic on I-35E in NW Dallas

Dallas firefighters responded about 3:20 p.m. to the 9700 block of the freeway, near Regal Row Drive, Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said.

A mattress that got stuck beneath a tractor-trailer on Interstate 35E caught fire, engulfing the truck and shutting down the highway in northwest Dallas on Saturday afternoon, officials said.

Access in both directions was still limited about 6 p.m., according to Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans.

Firefighters responded about 3:20 p.m. to the 9700 block of the freeway, near Regal Row Drive, Evans said.

Several drivers had flagged down the driver of the tractor-trailer after noticing the mattress trapped beneath the truck. The pulled over to get the mattress out, but it caught fire and engulfed the entire truck, Evans said.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

The highway was shut down in both directions for about an hour.
