Arlington police officer released from hospital with 'significant challenges ahead'

Police Chief Will Johnson released pictures of the officer's duty belt, where a bullet passed through as it entered the officer's body.

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Arlington police officer who was shot during a traffic stop Friday night has been released from the hospital.

"He has significant challenges ahead but for now he is home," police Chief Will Johnson tweeted Monday afternoon.

Johnson also shared several pictures of the officer's duty belt, where a bullet passed through as it entered the pelvic area of his body.

The shooting happened shortly before midnight on Friday in a parking lot at West Randol Mill and Fielder roads.

An officer pulled over a vehicle in the parking lot, smelled marijuana and then called for backup, said Lt. Chris Cook, police spokesman. When two responding officers arrived, the initial officer and one of the responding officers approached the vehicle.

The responding officer went to the passenger's side and asked the passenger to get out of the car. The passenger then fled on foot across the parking lot, at one point firing a gun at the responding officer, striking him, Cook said.

The officer who initially made the traffic stop returned fire, striking the suspect, who was identified as Treshun Symone Miller, 20.

Miller was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Officers found 2.05 ounces of marijuana and two digital scales in the car that was pulled over in the parking lot. The driver was identified as Jessica Lee Lawson, police said.

Friday night wasn't Miller's or Lawson's first interaction with Arlington police. Miller was the getaway driver and Lawson was a passenger in his car during a 2017 shooting at Stonebriar Centre in Frisco, police said. Neither one was the alleged shooter. Arlington police arrested the two of them in that case.
