Man dies from injuries in Carrollton house explosion, attorney says

Sergio Valdez was injured in January after his home exploded on Highland Drive.

CARROLLTON, Texas — A man has died nearly one month after his home exploded in Carrollton last month, according to his family's attorney.

The attorney, Jesus Garcia at Kherkher Garcia, LLP, told WFAA that 51-year-old Sergio Valdez passed away on Saturday, Feb. 17.

Valdez was taken to a hospital on Jan. 20 after the early morning explosion. At the time, Fire Marshall investigators believed there was a gas leak under of the bathroom that exploded after someone lit a cigarette.

The rest of the family inside the home wasn't hurt.

"Mr. Valdez was a loving, dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be dearly missed," Garcia said in a statement.

Valdez's family filed a lawsuit against Atmos Energy the day after the explosion. With Valdez's passing, Garcia confirmed with WFAA that they will update their lawsuit.

"The impact to the family has tragically increased, therefore, the damages they are seeking will increase," said Garcia.

Atmos Energy and the Carrollton Fire Marshall explosion started investigating the explosion shortly after it happened

WFAA has reached out to Atmos Energy for comment on the lawsuit and victim's death.
