Lawsuit filed against Atmos Energy for Carrollton house explosion

On Highland Drive in Carrollton, one man was injured in a house explosion Saturday. His attorney said they are suing Atmos.

CARROLLTON, Texas — On Highland Drive in Carrollton, a man was hurt in a house explosion early Saturday morning.

"He woke up in the middle of the night, early morning hours. He walks into the bathroom. Next thing he knows, there's an explosion," said Jesus Garcia Jr., the family's attorney at Kherkher Garcia, LLP.

Garcia said the victim's arms, face and other parts of his body are severely burned. He is being treated at the hospital.

The rest of the family inside the house was uninjured.

"We filed a lawsuit on Sunday," said Garcia. He said his law firm has two active cases against Atmos.

Fire marshal investigators said there was an underground gas leak in the bathroom, and believe it was an isolated leak. Officials said it happened when a cigarette was lit.

Garcia said, "Right now, they're in reaction mode. Something explodes and they run there and people are already injured. Atmos needs to get ahead of it. They need to get their equipment before it fails, not the other way around."

Atmos Energy sent WFAA a statement Tuesday evening:

"Our crews have made the necessary repairs and gas has been restored to the area. We would like to thank Carrollton Fire Rescue and all emergency responders for their assistance and coordination."
