Woman arrested for murder after fentanyl overdose in Denton, police say

The suspect, Ryan Michelle Warner, was charged with murder following the fatal overdose of 38-year-old Shaun Cross on March 25, police say.
In 2023, 115 million fake fentanyl pills were seized, nearly 45 million more than the year prior.

DENTON, Texas — A 45-year-old Denton woman has been charged with the death of a man who overdosed on fentanyl in March, police say.

The suspect, Ryan Michelle Warner, was charged with murder following the fatal overdose of 38-year-old Shaun Cross on March 25, Denton police said in a news release.

Officers found Cross' body inside an encampment in the 1900 block of Brinker Road, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Cross’s cause of death as fentanyl and methamphetamine toxicity.

Investigators later discovered evidence that Warner sold the drugs to Cross, police say.

Denton PD arrested Warner on May 21 in the 800 block of W. Hickory Street. She is being held in the City of Denton jail.

The department said this is the fourth fentanyl murder arrest in the area since a new state law went into effect on Sept. 1, 2023, that created a criminal offense of murder for supplying fentanyl that results in death.
