WYLIE, Texas — A 21-year-old man was arrested on a murder charge in the fentanyl overdose death of a 17-year-old girl in April, police said Thursday.
Destiny Martinez died April 2 after she was found unconscious at a location in the 3400 block of Viburnum Drive in Wylie.
Wylie police determined that she obtained pills containing fentanyl from Alejandro Martinez (no relation), a police news release said.
After a toxicology report was completed, police obtained a warrant for Alejandro Martinez's arrest on a charge of murder, police said.
Police said the pills containing fentanyl were not sold to Destiny Martinez in Wylie, though more information was not released.
The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services confirmed to WFAA that Destiny Martinez was in state foster care custody at the time of her death. The agency is also investigating her death.
EMPOWER, the company that manages foster care in Collin County and several other North Texas counties, has not responded to multiple questions about the incident.
In separate cases in January, a student at Wylie East High School died of an overdose, but more details were not released.
Fentanyl-related cases have been on the rise in Texas in recent years. In Texas, a new law went into effect on Sept. 1, 2023, that created a criminal offense of murder for manufacturing or distributing fentanyl that results in death.
