Officers stop Weatherford bank robber who staged getaway car, changed clothes after crime

Police discovered the suspect had staged his getaway car over four miles away, followed railroad tracks into town, and walked to the bank.

WEATHERFORD, Texas — Officers stopped an armed bank robber who tried to trick them as he tried to get away, according to the Weatherford Police Department.

On Tuesday just before 5 p.m., 911 received a report of an armed robbery at the 800 Block of Santa Fe Drive in Weatherford. Three minutes after the call, officers were on the scene and beginning to search the area for the suspect.

Members of Weatherford police's street crimes unit and one of the department's K9s found a male matching the descriptors given by bank employees in the nearby creek bed about five minutes after they got to the scene. 

The suspect began running from officers, traveling northeast toward Heritage Park where officers were waiting to arrest him.

Officers recovered all the stolen money, which was a little more than $23,000. There were no injuries to the officers, bank employees, or the suspect.

MEDIA RELEASE INCIDENT: Aggravated Robbery on 06/06/2023 At 4:49pm, 911 received a report of an armed robbery at the 800 Block of Santa Fe Drive. At 4:52pm, Officers arrive on scene and begin searching the area for the suspect. Members of the WPD Street Crimes Unit and K9 Jack locate a male matching the descriptors given by bank employees in the nearby creek bed at 4:58pm. The suspect began running from officers, traveling northeast toward Heritage Park where officers were waiting to arrest him. Officers recovered all the stolen money, totaling over $23,000. No injuries were sustained by officers, bank employees, or the suspect. After further investigation, it was discovered that the suspect had staged his getaway car over 4 miles away at Scotts Meadows Court, followed the railroad tracks into town, and walked to the bank. The suspect entered the bank, jumped over the teller counter, and asked for money while displaying a weapon that was later found to be a black pellet gun. After the Robbery occurred, the suspect retrieved staged items from the creek bed, including a change of clothes and wader boots. He was walking back to his vehicle in the creek when he was discovered by Officers. This is a great example of a quick response by WPD Officers who will search through the muck and mire to protect our community. #strongcommunity

The suspect entered the bank, jumped over the teller counter, and asked for money while displaying a weapon later found to be a black pellet gun.

After the robbery occurred, the suspect got some staged items from the creek bed, including a change of clothes and wader boots. He was walking back to his vehicle in the creek when officers discovered him.
