Rideshare driver from Sherman killed in Plano shooting, arrest made

The family of Mohamed Thera says the late Wednesday night rideshare was supposed to be the last of the day, but it ended up being Mohamed's last ever.

PLANO, Texas — The family of Mohamed Thera says the late Wednesday night rideshare was supposed to be the last of the day, but it ended up being Thera's last ever.

Court documents share that Thera, who drove for Uber, was in Plano to pick up a rideshare passenger. But, according to court documents, that ride was "cancelled shortly after it was confirmed."

"The vehicle was stolen and the victim was laying in the street with a significant wound to the head," said Plano police officer Jennifer Chapman.

Investigators had to look no further than the last name on Thera's ride log: a 21-year-old named Jaheim Kemp. It is unclear what happened, only that Thera was found lying in the middle of the road on P Avenue and his vehicle was gone.

"We do know we have a deceased victim, a family without their father and a suspect found in our victim's vehicle," said Chapman.

Court documents say Kemp took Thera's car. Thera lived in Sherman with his wife, four children and grandchildren. Driving for Uber was his second job. The family describes him as a loving person, who was a hard worker and a provider.

"You will only hear one flaw...that he was too nice," said Mahamadou Diallo, who considers himself family. "I know the amount of difficulties I went through. There is no one who would do what Mohamed did for me," Diallo said.

Diallo said Thera would come down to the metroplex for rideshares to make some extra money for his family in Texas and his large extended West African family back home in Mali.

Plano detectives kept an eye on Thera's vehicle, tracking it to Dallas and then back to Plano. Chapman tells WFAA, at one point, Kemp was blocks from his Plano home and where Mohamed was shot. Kemp was "found in possession of a 9mm handgun at the time of his arrest." Court documents reveal the spent gun cartridge matched the gun in his possession.

"Our detectives worked diligently - did not sleep for the 14 hours that it took to put this person in jail," she said.

Kemp faces charges of capital murder, unauthorized use of a vehicle and unlawful carrying of a weapon. His bond has been set at more than $1 million.

"You took away a responsible member of society," said Diallo.

The family has organized a funding page to help the family with funeral expenses.
