NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas — A 26-year-old woman is facing charges after hitting and killing someone with her vehicle as she allegedly drove while intoxicated, the North Richland Hills Police Department says.

A spokesperson with the police department said the incident happened just before 8:30 p.m. in the 4400 block of Booth Calloway on Dec. 27. A caller told 911 dispatch that a woman had been hit by a car and “had visible injuries,” according to the report.

North Richland Hills Police said as emergency responders were on the way to the scene, the victim stopped breathing and CPR was started immediately.

Police said when EMS arrived, the victim, identified in a medical examiner's report as Mercedes Kaunda, 25, was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries, and she was later pronounced dead.

Police said the driver of the vehicle, identified as Gabriella Anchondo, was arrested at the scene. Police said Anchondo is facing a charge of intoxication manslaughter with the vehicle -- a second-degree felony.

Police confirmed Anchondo was recently arrested by North Richland Hills on Dec. 12 for a DWI (her second) and was out on bond pending a trial when this crash happened. She's currently being held in the Tarrant County jail on a $75,000 bond.
