HUNT COUNTY -- New details are emerging in the murder of University Park Fire Captain Robert Poynter.
Chacey Poynter, Robert's wife, is currently being held in the Hunt County Jail on a charge of conspiring to commit murder. Her boyfriend, Michael Garza, is charged with murder. His bond was set at $1 million on Tuesday.
In newly released documents, Royse City police say Chacey Poynter told them her husband was abusive and she had been dating Garza while being married. When Robert filed for divorce and threatened to take their daughter away, Chacey told police she turned to Garza, who told her he was a "shot caller" and could have anyone killed.
Robert Poynter's daughter denied that her father was abusive to Chacey Poynter, who was her father's second wife, in a message to News 8 on Tuesday.
“I can guarantee he was most definitely not [abusive],” Nicole Diane Poynter said. “He was loving, kind, and very attentive. He was a wonderful father, and in all the time he was married to my mom, 20 years, he was only ever caring, giving, and everything a person should strive to be. If anyone in his second marriage was abusive, it was Chacey. I have witnessed that firsthand.”
Chacey told police she went to Garza's house on Sept. 9 so they could hash out a plan to hurt Robert Poynter "so they could be together." She also told police that Garza took out several guns and ammo while she was at his residence, and told her they should meet with Robert in "'deep' Dallas" so they could "make 'it' look like a robbery."
The documents go on to say that Chacey told police she dropped Garza off in an unknown wooded area in Royse City, then parked her Jeep on a dirt road and called her husband to say she was stuck.
When Robert arrived to help, Garza shot and killed him with a shotgun, Chacey said.
She told police she started screaming and called 911 before Garza hung up her phone and threw it in the mud.
"Chacey informed the [police] that she did not want Robert Poynter dead she only wanted him to hurt the way he made her hurt," the documents state.
A truck leading back to Garza was reported as being seen in the area at the time of the murder, and that led police to Garza's home.
Robert Poynter worked for the University Park Fire Department for 18 years.
A gathering for family and friends will be held Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the University Park Fire Department. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Highland Park Presbyterian Church.
