More than 100 animals seized after multi-agency investigation in Erath County, officials say

Deputies say they were first called two weeks ago to the property on County Road 712 in Erath County about a dead animal.

ERATH COUNTY, Texas — More than 100 animals investigators found to be living in “unhealthy and unsafe” conditions were seized this week from a property in Erath County after a multi-agency investigation, according to the Erath County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say they were first called to the property on County Road 712 in Erath County about a dead animal two weeks ago.

“Deputies contacted an individual on CR 712 and discovered that this person was in possession of numerous animals that appeared to be in poor condition, and an investigation was opened,” a news release from the sheriff’s office reads. “Numerous dogs, cats, and livestock were found at this time to be living with inadequate water and food supplies along with inadequate shelter.”

A Justice of the Peace granted a warrant to seize the animals Monday, and the sheriff’s office, representatives from Stephenville Police Department Animal Control, Animal Investigation and Response, the Erath County Humane Society, Erath County Fire and EMS staff, and more helped with the operation, officials say.

“The result of the operation yielded the seizure of over 100 animals that were found to be in unhealthy and unsafe conditions,” according to a news release. “The seized animals consisted of numerous dogs, hamsters, rats, reptiles consisting of lizards and snakes, birds, horses, goats, pigs, and a ferret.”

Investigators also say they found dead domesticated and livestock animals on the property during the investigation and seizure.

Officials say the surviving animals are in the custody of the Erath County Sheriff’s Office pending a Justice of the Peace hearing. They are being seen and cared for by veterinarians from Greeks Creek Veterinary Hospital and Texas A&M University.

Deputies didn’t provide suspect information, and the investigation remains ongoing.
