400 animals seized from 'deplorable' conditions at Texas pet store

The animals were in "poor condition" but are expected to recover.

BURKBURNETT, Texas — More than 400 animals were seized from a Texas pet store after allegations of "unsanitary and inhumane conditions," officials said.

The North Texas-based Animal Investigation & Response group announced the seizure, which happened at the Little Critters pet store in Burkburnett, north of Wichita Falls.

Police and the Humane Society of Wichita County were also involved in the seizure.

Police investigated the case and found the animals, which included birds, snakes, rabbits, guinea pigs and kittens, living in "deplorable, crowded, unsanitary and inhumane conditions" at the store, according to Animal Investigation & Response.

Police obtained a warrant to take the animals into custody.

Animal Investigation & Response and the Humane Society helped remove the animals from the store on Tuesday. Many animals were in "poor condition," though they're expected to recover at a temporary shelter at the Humane Society, according to Animal Investigation & Response.

"They are receiving necessary veterinary attention as well as the love and care they need and crave," the group said.

The Humane Society posted on Facebook on Wednesday morning, saying they're looking for volunteers to help care for the animals, as well as foster homes.

The Animal Investigation & Response group is a non-profit that helps law enforcement and animal control agencies with animal abuse cases.
