What does Hurricane Delta mean for North Texas?

Hurricane Delta will make landfall likely in Louisiana on Friday. Will it have an impact on our North Texas weather?

Updated: 5 P.M. Thursday

Short Answer:

Hurricane Delta will likely not greatly influence our weather here in North Texas as we will be well on the west side of the storm.

However, some scattered showers are possible mainly for eastern North Texas tonight and Friday.

More on that below:

Long Answer:

The Track

Delta is now firmly in the Gulf of Mexico, and is now back to major hurricane (category 3) status.

It will continue its northwest movement until tomorrow afternoon and then slowly start to to curve to the north/northeast.

This makes a landfall along the southern Louisiana coast likely. Somewhere around Cameron, Louisiana (south of Lake Charles) looks likely. This is also the same area where Hurricane Laura made landfall.

Delta MAY weaken just a bit prior to landfall, but will still make landfall as a strong hurricane.

After making landfall, Delta will weaken and quickly move off to the north and east bringing heavy rain and gusty winds to parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, and Tennessee.

Other Possibilities?

While little shift east or west in the track is possible, and the exact strength of the storm at landfall is still uncertain, any big changes in the forecast at this point are unlikely.

This means the forecast for North Texas written below is fairly certain.

North Texas Weather

North Texas will be on the west side of the storm regardless of the exact path. Therefore, our weather will not be greatly influenced by Delta.

Most of North Texas will just be dry, warm, and a more humid on Friday with the weekend looking warmer and dry.

On Friday, some scattered tropical showers are possible for eastern North Texas, but even in those areas not everyone will see rain. It's not impossible for eastern parts of D-FW (McKinney to Dallas to Lancaster) to see a stray shower, but that is a very low chance.

East Texas and especially into Louisiana will be the more favored area for rain with this storm. Think back to Hurricane Laura. It made landfall just east of the TX/LA border, and hardly any of North Texas saw rain from that storm.

As Delta moves away this weekend, we will warm up with temps in the 80s and 90s for Saturday and Sunday. Sunday looks quite warm with highs in the 90s (even some upper 90s) all across North Texas.
