Granbury neighborhood recovers after 2013 tornadoes

The memories of that May night continue to haunt some of those who survived it
Six people died on May 15, 2013 when a powerful tornado struck the Granbury area.

GRANBURY — In a neighborhood that was devastated by an EF-4 tornado two-and-a-half years ago, recovery is more evident than ever before. But the memories of that May night continue to haunt some of those who survived it.

Suzi Mendoza and her family escaped the tornado's path by only a few minutes on May 15, 2013.

"We just looked up and knew something wasn't right," she said. "My guts were shaking. It was very intense."

The family's home suffered extensive damage, as did some of their belongings, like cars.

News 8 has profiled Habitat for Humanity efforts to rebuild homes in the Ranchos Brazos neighborhood, where dozens of homes were damaged.

Six people were also killed by the twister.

"The recovery is finally really showing," Mendoza said.

Hood County Fire Marshal Ray Wilson said since the twisters hit, his county has registered more than 50 homeowners who installed storm shelters.

"We just signed one up the other week," he told WFAA on Monday.

Although the program is voluntary, the county database lets them know where people may need assistance in the event of a future severe weather outbreak.

Some of the habitat homes built feature "strong" rooms that give residents at least one option if they are caught in a bad storm.
