Texas ties on USMNT Roster

Ricardo Pepi

Pepi is a 21-year-old striker from El Paso, Texas, and also played for FC Dallas.

Pepi played in the FC Dallas youth academy from 2016 to 2019, before being called up to the senior team in April 2019. Pepi played three seasons for FC Dallas and was loaned to with FC Augsburg of the Bundesliga. The transfer fee was a reported $20 million plus add-ons, making him the most expensive American MLS player to sign for a European club and the second most expensive player to transfer from MLS to a European league.

Then, in July 2023, Pepi signed a five-year contract with PSV Eindhoven after the Dutch club agreed to pay $9.8 million to Augsburg for Pepi's transfer.

Pepi has played for the USMNT since 2021 and was widely regarded as one of the biggest snubs of the 2022 FIFA World Cup roster. Pepi scored three goals in two games of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification, second-most on the team during this time (Christian Pulisic, 5).

Weston McKennie

Weston McKennie is a 25-year-old midfielder from Little Elm, Texas, and also played in the FC Dallas youth academy. McKennie is an army brat who previously lived in Washington state and Germany before moving to Little Elm.

McKennie played in the FC Dallas youth academy from 2009 to 2016 and turned down a homegrown contract to join Schalke, a club in the Bundesliga league in Germany.

McKennie played for Schalke from 2017 to 2021, when he was loaned to Juventus, a popular club team in the Serie A league in Italy.  In March 2021, Juventus exercised their purchase option for McKennie, signing him to a four-year deal.

In 2023, Juventus loaned McKennie to English club Leeds United, where he made 20 appearances. McKennie returned to Juventus for the 2023-24 season.

McKennie has played for the USMNT since 2017.

Chris Richards

Richards is a 23-year-old center back from Hoover, Ala., but moved to Texas to play in the FC Dallas youth academy. Richards played in the FC Dallas youth academy from 2017 to 2019 and was loaned to German club Bayern Munich. Richards was promoted to the Bayern Munich senior team in 2020 and played three seasons there.

He later went to Bundesliga club 1899 Hoffenheim on loan and later signed a five-year contract with Premier League club Crystal Palace in 2022.

Richards made his USMNT debut in 2020. Richards scored the first goal of the 2023 Concacaf Nations League Final against Canada.

USMNT defending its Concacaf Nations League title, looking to win third straight

The United States has won both previous iterations of the tournament, defeating Mexico in the inaugural tournament and Canada in 2023.

Despite their domination in this tournament, U.S. soccer head coach Gregg Berhalter also shot down any idea that his team in under pressure to win the tournament.

“We respect our rivals, and we want to play at our highest level. If we do that, we will have a great chance to win. For us, it’s not about pressure, it’s about performance”, Berhalter said. "For us, it’s not an obligation to win the tournament. We use these opportunities to compete at the highest level, and that is what this tournament is about."

The tournament serves as an opportunity to compete at the highest level with preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in mind, which will also be played at AT&T Stadium. The Arlington-based venue will host more matches than any other stadium in the 2026 FIFA World Cup: nine, including five group stage matches and one of the two semi-finals.

The Concacaf Nations League Finals will serve as the first of many opportunities to prepare for playing in AT&T Stadium in the lead up to the World Cup. The United States will play at AT&T Stadium again later this summer when they take on Bolivia in Copa América.
