GEORGETOWN, Texas — Frisco Wakeland capped off an incredible postseason run with thrilling, high-intensity win in the 5A girls state championship that came down to the final minutes.
The Wolverines defeated the Colleyville Heritage Panthers, 3-2, on Saturday at the Georgetown ISD Athletic Complex in Central Texas.
Before the state championship, the Wolverines did not allow a single goal in open play during the playoffs:
- 4-0 win vs. Frisco Lebanon Trail
- 7-0 win vs. Dallas White
- 1-0 win vs. Prosper Walnut Grove
- 4-0 win vs. Lucas Lovejoy
- 1-0 vs. Frisco Reedy
- 0-0 vs. Leander Rouse – won 4-2 in penalty kicks
Frisco Wakeland jumped out to a 3-0 lead courtesy of a brace by sophomore forward Audrey Gilbert (46', 62') and a goal by senior midfielder/forward Anna Carrera (67').
Colleyville Heritage fought back, however, scoring two goals in two minutes (76', 78') with a brace by freshman forward Addison Shimmick. Despite the late surge, Frisco Wakeland held on for the final minute-and-a-half to win their fourth state championship in program history (2011, 2018 and 2022).
The dominant run from the Wolverines is primed to continue, too, with 18 of the team's 23 players returning (three freshman, 10 sophomores and five juniors).
