Sisterhood bringing out the best in Mansfield Legacy's girls basketball program

Mansfield -- With a pair of playoff wins in hand, the Mansfield Legacy girls basketball team is in building mode.

"We preach sisterhood, even from our feeder schools," says head coach Michelle Morris. "That sisterhood is the foundation that we build on and now we expect it."

"You have to bond, it takes a few games and then when you get it you come together," says team captain Grace Daniels

But it's a process. Just ask Lyric and Harmoni Turner. Lyric is a senior and younger sister Harmoni is a freshman.

Their father, Rocky, is also known as radio personality "Rock-T" from the "Rickey Smiley Morning Show." He says both of his daughters are talented, but they approach the game in different ways.

"If they played 10 games, Harmoni would win 5 off straight skill," says the elder Turner, "Lyric would win another five off of you're not beating me, and I'm going to do anything I have to do to beat you."

They're nearly three years apart, so this year marked the first time the Turner sisters actually played on a team together. And at the start, let's just say Lyric and Harmoni were not in sync.

Harmoni's skill was good enough to earn an invitation to the USA 16-and-under national team tryouts when she was 13. She's a pass-first point guard.

Lyric is an energy player, more adept at scoring. But on all the teams she's played on, she had taken care of the ball-handling duties. So, their first game in a team setting was a struggle.

"Really they couldn't play together," says Rocky, "they were arguing the whole time."

And when they subbed out at the same time, it was a frosty situation on the bench.

"They were like turning their backs to each other," said Krystal Turner, the girls' mother.

The girls say neither wanted to be wrong and initially neither would relent.

"She's yelling at me. I'm yelling at her," said Lyric.

"It was a little rough," Harmoni agreed.

"And I'm looking at them saying stop," said Krystal, "calm down!"

The entire family laughs about it now because, with Mom leading the way, they've figured it out.

"It's a phenomenal sight to see your babies are out there together playing," says Rocky.

Their entire team has come together, as well. The Broncos are headed to the third round of the playoffs, after easily beating Bryan Adams Thursday night.

At the beginning of last season, the Broncos had zero playoff victories, now they have four.

"We learned to trust each other, so it's making our bond better," said Lyric. She was talking about her relationship with her sister, but it applies to the entire team as well.

"It brought us closer together it made us realize what we really see in each other by actually playing with each other." says Harmoni.

The game they love forced them to examine the love they have for each other.

Sisterhood.

It's building at Mansfield Legacy, just like the girls basketball program.
