Dana Vollmer ended her Olympics with a third medal and a slice of history Saturday.

With a gold-medal finish Saturday night, Granbury's Dana Vollmer became the first mother to win Olympic gold.

She had already become just the second American to win an Olympic medal after giving birth with silver and bronze wins earlier this week.

Vollmer, a Granbury High School grad, swam the third leg of the women's 4x100 medley relay Saturday, recording a strong split and setting up fellow Texan Simone Manuel for the freestyle leg and the gold medal finish.

Vollmer was also part of the silver medal-winning U.S. 4x100-meter freestyle relay team a week earlier. The Australians took the gold medal with a world record time of 3 minutes, 30.65 seconds.

With Vollmer swimming the third leg, the Americans set a U.S. record, finishing in 3:31.89. Canada took the bronze medal in the event.

Vollmer, 28, competed in her third Olympics. She gave birth to her son, Arlen, 17 months ago.

“To come back, it was humbling,” Vollmer told USA TODAY Sports back at Olympic trials. “I could hardly make it through warm-up … To think that I would be here swimming faster than I ever have in season? No. I'm stoked that I am, and I'm really excited that I am, and I feel happier in my own life and in my schedule and in the routine that I have — and that makes me really excited going forward.”
