UNIVERSITY PARK, TX - SMU players picked a tough windy day to impress pro scouts.
The ball is just moving around a lot, says former NFL quarterback Jerry Rhome. It's just tough. I mean, it's like throwing curve balls.
SMU Wide Receiver Aldrick Robinson was one of those players who left unhappy. His goal was to prove that he had good hands and could run good routes.
I don't feel like I accomplished that, Robinson said after the workout. I don't feel like my routes were on point today but I think my hands were on display. I feel like I showed them I had good hands but my routes, I don't feel I ran good today.
Robinson, who grew up in Waxahachie, finished second in SMU history in receiving yardage with 33-hundred yards and 30 career touchdowns.
We saw him at the combine, says Packers scout Alonzo Highsmith.We already knew he could run. He didn't need to do anything today so he just caught the ball and caught the ball pretty well.
In the last 24 years, only two wide receivers have been drafted from SMU. Last year, Emanuel Sanders was taken by Pittsburgh in the third round. Before that, you have to go all the way back to 1987 when the Chicago Bears took Ron Morris in the second round.
I would be surprised if he's not drafted. says SMU receivers coach Jerry Reinebold. I think that people will have to get over the fact that he's not a big guy, and they all want those six foot two, 220 pound guys. In the end it's guys that can get you in the end zone that matters. I think he's got a great chance.
Robinson also attended the NFL combine in Indianapolis in February where he was tied with the 4th fastest time for wide receivers with a 4.43 forty. SMU head coach June Jones has called him the fastest wide receiver he's ever coached.
I think it's one of my best assets, Robinson says. My speed is obviously what everyone knows me for. People probably wouldn't even look at me because of my size, so speed is a big thing.
Robinson is the only wide receiver in SMU history with back to back 1,000 yard seasons. Now he has to convince NFL scouts that he can do that in the pros as well.
