Texas trying to lure Cedar Hill coach Joey McGuire

Multiple reports Texas trying to lure Cedar Hill coach Joey McGuire to football staff.
Chris Gilbert of Lancaster could play a key role in some major changes across Texas high school football coaches.

There are multiple reports Cedar Hill football coach Joey McGuire has been offered to be an assistant for Texas coach Charlie Strong.

McGuire, who just finished his 12th season as the head coach at Cedar Hill, has won three state titles with the Longhorns in Texas high school football's highest classification. This run includes back-to-back state championships the last two seasons -- the other came in 2006.

In its report, 247sports said "It may be tough to hire McGuire away from Cedar Hill, however."

His son is a quarterback on the team, and sources indicate he'd like to see him all the way through his senior season. McGuire has already been offered two assistant positions from other programs this offseason, but he turned both down.

Coaches throughout the state feel McGuire would be a great fit on a college staff.

"It's just a matter of time (before he takes a college job)," said Rowlett head coach Doug Stephens. "You talk about a guy who has a good relationship with kids and is full of energy. He will do an awesome job. He's got a great rapport with everybody."

"Joey would be an absolutely tremendous addition to any college staff," said Austin Westlake head coach Todd Dodge. "First, he's a damn good football coach. Two, he'll be a heck of a recruiter. He has that great personality. I think it would be awesome.

The search to fill the position began less than a month ago when longtime Texas assistant Bruce Chambers was fired Dec. 31.

Jan. 5: What I Hear

School returns from holiday break this week and there likely will be lots to talk about. Duncanville has narrowed its choices for head football coach to include Skyline's Reggie Samples, Lancaster's Chris Gilbert and Arlington Seguin's Carlos Lynn to replace Jeff Dicus. Those have been the top candidates since Dicus announced in November his departure. Gilbert, a former South Oak Cliff player, seems to be the leader.

After Chad Morris was named SMU head coach in early December, Morris (a Eustace native and former Bay City, Stephenville and Lake Travis HC) made an early visit to DeSoto for players and a coach. Nothing official has been done on Claude Mathis leaving for SMU to become an assistant but Mathis did text this weekend "nothing yet, but next week it should be." If Mathis is announced at SMU as expected, look for Samples to be a top choice if he can bring some staff for an immediate impact or DeSoto offensive coordinator Todd Peterman to get the move up. Mathis move official Monday afternoon

With high-profile coaches with Texas high school football ties, there are many scenarios which could happen. In addition to Morris at SMU, Kansas' new coach David Beaty has a lot of respect for many North Texas coaches and would love someone like Cedar Hill's Joey McGuire to jump to college. Former Southlake Carroll quarterback Riley Dodge (a Texas assistant) was a GA for Beaty at Texas A&M and is a top candidate for the Jayhawks staff.

Houston's newly hired Tom Herman is from Ohio State and the brainy Herman is an offensive whiz who once coached under Mack Brown at Texas. Herman is highly interested in Spring Westfield coach Corby Meekins and, of course, Allen coach Tom Westerberg has been a college target for several years and just won a fourth state title and third in a row. Herman, of course, will be in Dallas this week for the national title game of Ohio State and Oregon. (Meekins officially to Houston on Monday afternoon).

Stay tuned.
