Another one: North Texas has produced a ridiculous amount of major golf championship wins

DALLAS — North Texas has produced no shortage of major golf championship wins. Scottie Scheffler is just adding to the list.

The Dallas resident won his second Masters title Sunday in Augusta, Ga., running away from a field of contenders with a rally of birdies on the back nine.

Scheffler also won the Masters' coveted green jacket in 2022 for his first major championship.

Scheffler's two Masters titles have added to the stockpile of major victories produced by North Texas-raised golfers over the years. Scheffler's current Dallas counterpart, Jordan Spieth, has three himself, and golf legends Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and Lee Trevino all got their start here in North Texas.

By our count, North Texas has produced 46 major golf championship wins -- 31 on the men's side, 15 on the women's side.

Now, which golfers count as one of ours to claim? That's a fair question. We went based on golfers who were either born in North Texas or were mostly raised here.

Scheffler, for example, was born in New Jersey but moved to Dallas as a kid and went to Highland Park High School.

Bryson Dechambeau, who won the 2020 U.S. Open, isn't included in this total -- he lives in Dallas and went to SMU, but he grew up in California. Payne Stewart was another major winner from SMU (three times, in fact), but Stewart grew up in Missouri.

But if the debate comes down to the titles that could be added to North Texas' total, then that says plenty about the tradition-rich golf history around here.

Here's the list, with each golfer's hometown in parentheses:
