Travel and traffic: What to know before the eclipse

A spokesperson from Dallas Love Field reports the airport is expecting to see up to 130,000 passengers between Sunday and Tuesday.

DALLAS — With the total solar eclipse on April 8 just hours away, prepare for busy airports and busy roads.

A spokesperson from Dallas Love Field reports the airport is expecting to see up to 130,000 passengers between Sunday and Tuesday. A DFW Airport spokesperson said its rental car partners are bracing for their busiest days on record.

"We've heard up to a million people might be coming to the state of Texas to view this," Texas Department of Transportation Public Information Officer Kenna Mitchell told WFAA.

TXDOT says, during the eclipse, sections of major corridors in the path of totality could experience traffic congestion with up to four times the amount of traffic compared to normal rush hours.

"Be prepared tomorrow, there could be some lengthy delays," Mitchell said.

Dallas police say there will also be rolling road closures into downtown Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. Exits off major highways along I-35E, Woodall Rogers, Central Expressway, I-45 and I-30 into downtown will be affected.

Mitchell said TXDOT wants to be sure people don't stop to view the eclipse along the highways.

"Do not stop along the highways, that is extremely dangerous to try to get out of your vehicle," Mitchell said. "Next to high-speed traffic or even parking next to high-speed traffic. If you are going to be traveling around that time, exit the highway and find a safe location to park to view it."
