Elton John becomes an EGOT winner at the Emmy Awards

Elton John became just the 19th EGOT winner.

WASHINGTON — Sir Elton John has just achieved EGOT status.

The 76-year-old singer won an Emmy Award on Monday for "Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium." The Disney+ concert special followed the singer's last North American show in his "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" Tour.

Elton John was not in attendance at the award ceremony to accept the award due to a knee operation, producer Ben Winston said while accepting on his behalf.

"He’s absolutely fine, but he wanted to send his love and thanks to the Television Academy for this incredible award,” Winston said. “We did know this was going to be historic because it was going to win a man who has created the soundtrack to all of our lives. He’s done so much great for society, who is all of our heroes."

"We didn’t know that it was going to win him an EGOT,” Winston continued.

EGOT is the term used for the rare person who's won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award during their career. John is the 19th person to achieved such status.

The last person who became an EGOT winner was Viola Davis, who won a Grammy Award in 2023 for her memoir "Finding Me."

Other EGOT winners include Jennifer Hudson, John Legend and Rita Moreno.
