Colin Kroll, co-founder and CEO of the popular HQ Trivia app, was found dead in his apartment Sunday by the New York Police Department. He was 34.
An NYPD spokesperson confirmed Kroll's death to USA TODAY. The department was conducting a wellness check on Kroll when it found him in his apartment. He was pronounced "dead on arrival" at 12:18 a.m. ET in what is believed to be a possible drug overdose.
HQ Trivia became a viral sensation late last year and its popularity continued into 2018. Millions of people around the world flocked to the app, a live trivia game show that can be played on mobile phones at 9 p.m. ET every night. Players who answer all trivia questions correctly would win or split a prize that often was thousands of dollars. Like many other viral apps, HQ Trivia has seen its popularity fade, dropping to 18 on the iTunes Store's top trivia games list and out of the App Store's list of top 100 apps as of Sunday morning.
Prior to co-founding HQ Trivia, Kroll was one of the creators behind Vine, the popular six-second video streaming service bought by Twitter in 2012 for $30 million. After leaving Twitter he created HQ with fellow former Vine co-founder Rus Yusupov.
HQ Trivia did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
