Windows at a local deli smashed; owner doesn't want a GoFundMe, just customers

Surveillance video shows a man break into the restaurant, smash a few plastic bottles, then leave.

DALLAS — The Latin Deli on Abrams Road has served customers for the last 12 years. Owner Fernando Barrera told WFAA on Wednesday, the restaurant is like his baby.

"Food is my everything," Barrera said.

As a small business owner he knows that there will be high's and low's, but what happened to his restaurant on Sunday night, he described as one of the lowest moments he's experienced.

"Everything is affecting business right now, and when this happened, it hurt me," said Barrera.

Surveillance video captured the moments when a man picked up a rock, and smashed in the front windows of the restaurant. Dallas Police said it happened at about 10:30 pm. Even though nothing was stolen, Barrera said he is frustrated that this happened because it will now cost him up to $4,500 to fix the damages.

Instead of creating a GoFundMe, Barrera posted on his Facebook that he just wants the customers to support.

"I think a lot of people are made at me because I didn't create a GoFundMe," he said. "You want to help me? Let me cook you a steak, let me cook you an omelet."

And on Wednesday, he had a non-stop lunch rush.

"We saw what happened so we were like, support him," one woman eating with her son said.

"I wouldn't know what would cause somebody to vandalize someone else's restaurant," said Christina Rodriguez, another customer.

Barrera said he doesn't want a handout, just honest work. He said it's going to take anywhere from four to five days to replace the windows.
