Southlake Mayor John Huffman announces run for Michael Burgess' seat in Congress

John Huffman is running in the Republican primary for Michael Burgess’ District 26 seat representing parts of Cooke, Denton, Tarrant, and Wise Counties.

SOUTHLAKE, Texas — Southlake Mayor John Huffman this week announced that he’s running in the Republican primary for Michael Burgess’ seat representing parts of Cooke, Denton, Tarrant, and Wise counties in Congress.

Burgess, a physician, has represented the 26th district since 2003 and earlier this month announced his plans to retire from Congress at the end of his term.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported two other Republicans – Brandon Gill of Flower Mound and Scott Armey of Corinth – are also running for the seat. Gill is listed on the Texas Secretary of State’s website as an accepted filing.

“I’m running because of the insanity that’s going on at the federal level,” Huffman said in an excerpt from a recent appearance on The Mark Davis Show that he shared on social media. “We are in danger of losing this nation we love because the Biden administration and the Democrats in power are running it into the ground.”

Huffman, an entrepreneur who's lived in Southlake since 2008, was elected mayor of Southlake in 2021, but was first elected to the Southlake city council in 2015.

Huffman describes how he “helped support conservative candidates for school board who defeated the Leftists,” on his campaign website, and, as WFAA reported, he previously shared disproven election fraud claims on social media.

The filing period for the March 5 primary election continues until Dec. 11.
