GLEN ROSE, Texas — The Somervell County Sheriff's Department confirms Sgt. Stephen Gibson died in a traffic crash while on duty Wednesday morning.
Texas State Troopers responded to a call for the crash around 6:45 a.m. on State Highway 144 about four miles south of Glen Rose, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Officials say, Sgt. Gibson was traveling north on SH 144 when a white Ford F-150 pickup truck lost control traveling southbound and hit Sgt. Gibson's investigator truck.
Sgt. Gibson was killed in the crash, according to Texas DPS. He served as a Peace Officer for more than 25 years.
"Sgt. Gibson's unwavering commitment to serving and protecting the community and distinguished career will be forever remembered. During this difficult time, the family, and this office request privacy as we grieve the loss of this dedicated public servant," the department said in a statement.
"Today is a day that is very hard to put into words," the Somervell County Sheriff's Office said in a post on Facebook Wednesday afternoon.
The accident remains under investigation by Texas DPS. No further information was immediately available.
