Shaquille O'Neal helped sponsor gun buyback event in Dallas

The Dallas County Sheriff's Office collected more than 130 firearms at the event Saturday.

DALLAS — Basketball Hall of Famer and licensed deputy Shaquille O’Neal helped sponsor a gun buyback event in Dallas this weekend.

The event from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 10, at the Dallas County Sheriff’s Training Academy at 8401 S. Polk Street in Dallas "collected more than 130 firearms," according to the sheriff's office.

Handgun owners received a $100 gift card and long gun owners received a $125 gift card.

Shaq wasn't in attendance at the event, but in an announcement ahead of the event the sheriff's office said O'Neal is a licensed deputy in multiple states and supported the initiative.

"I support Sheriff Brown's initiatives; Sheriff is doing the right thing and keeping our communities safe," O'Neal said in the press release from the sheriff's office ahead of the event.
