DALLAS — Dallas police are looking into six separate incidents, where rocks were thrown off the Katy Trail Bridge onto vehicles on the Dallas North Tollway, police said Wednesday.
The North Texas Tollway Authority said one of its roadside safety trucks was hit early Tuesday morning. NTTA said that there have been six incidents over the course of two nights on July 1 and July 2. Two people required medical help Tuesday night. They were treated at the scene and released.
"Anything thrown off a bridge down to traffic below is going to present a big problem," said the NTTA's Michael Rey.
DPD says the suspects are unknown at this time.
The state of Texas has had its share of rock-throwing cases recently. Three years ago in Austin, there was a manhunt for a serial rock-thrower.
Austin Police had logged 52 cases of rock throwing over 18 months. All of the cases happened along the I-35 corridor.
This March in Temple, a woman sitting in the passenger seat of a car was killed by a rock thrown from an overpass.
"That is terrible. I can't imagine that. There's no telling what kind of damage that would cause," Niki Barnett said. She uses the Katy Trail to work out. "How scary to be going to your family and then something falling out of the sky like that. That's awful."
NTTA has sent its reports to DPD for further investigation. It has also requested help from DPS with patrols.
"We've also told DPS who monitor our system to be extra aware in that area," Rey said.
