Fatal crash leads to I-635 closure in Irving, police say

The at-fault driver was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

IRVING, Texas — Part of Interstate 635 in Irving has been shut down Friday evening due to a fatal wrong-way crash, the Irving Police Department says.

According to Irving PD, at about 2:30 p.m., a vehicle driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-635 collided head-on with another vehicle.

The at-fault driver was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. The passenger in the vehicle that was struck died at the scene, and the driver of that vehicle was also transported in serious condition, police said.

The names of the victims have not been released.

Police said the north and southbound President George Bush Turnpike exit ramps to I-635 westbound are closed while the investigation into the crash continues.

Drivers should expect delays in the interchange areas, officials warned.

Late Friday, investigators told WFAA that the suspect driver was female and that her blood would be drawn to see if intoxication was a factor. She is staring at a manslaughter charge, at the very least, per the department.

An investigator also said that a one-mile-long debris field was seen at the crash site, suggesting the woman may have driven the wrong way for that long.

A witness, per the investigator, told WFAA that the suspect was seen driving the wrong way down the right shoulder and then swerving into oncoming traffic when the crash happened. The department is trying to determine if the suspect entered the highway incorrectly by crossing the median or driving up an exit ramp.

In 2021, AAA named Texas the worst state in the nation for wrong-way crash fatalities.
