Denton police chief resigns after 16 months on the job

Deputy Chief Bryan Cose has been named interim chief as the city begins the search process for a permanent replacement.

DENTON, Texas — Denton police Chief Doug Shoemaker has resigned from his position, the city confirmed.

The city in a statement did not say why Shoemaker was stepping down, but the statement noted that he'll be on personal leave until his last day of employment on March 2.

Deputy Chief Bryan Cose has been named interim chief as the city begins the search process for a permanent replacement.

Shoemaker was hired to lead the Denton department in October 2022, coming to North Texas from Grand Junction, Colo., where he also served as chief. Shoemaker had also served as an officer in Jefferson City, Mo., earlier in his career.

"We are appreciative of his service the past 16 months and wish him all the best during this transition," the city said in a statement.
