15-year-old girl shot in the leg near Dallas high school, police say

Police said the incident happened around 1 p.m. on Ancestry Court near Legacy Drive and Old Seagoville Road, which is across from Grady Spruce High School.

DALLAS — A 15-year-old girl was shot in the leg near a Dallas high school on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The victim was taken to a hospital and is expected to be OK, officers told WFAA at the scene.

Police said the incident happened around 1 p.m. on Legacy Drive, between Ancestry Court and Old Seagoville Road, which is across from Grady Spruce High School in southeast Dallas. The area is located near South Masters Drive and U.S. 175.

Dallas ISD officials confirmed the teen who was shot is a student at Spruce High School. Her name is not being released. No other injuries were reported.

Police said multiple people were in a vehicle when it drove by the area and fired. Police said one shell casing from a 22-caliber gun was found. A witness saw the incident and reported it to police, officers said.

Police were able to find the car that was allegedly involved in the shooting on Masters Drive near U.S. 175. Police said the people in the car were taken into custody and believed to all be teens, but more information was not released.

Helicopter footage from the area showed a Dallas police presence in a neighborhood near the school, as well as several Dallas ISD police vehicles located at the front of the school.

Officials at A+ Academy Secondary School, which is across the street from Spruce, said their campus was on a "secure/soft lockdown" out of precaution Wednesday afternoon.

Security officials at the school were monitoring their front gate during the incident.
