Cause of Dallas apartment fire ruled 'undetermined,' 10 to 20 apartments impacted, fire investigators say

First responders reported heavy smoke coming from the two-story apartment building shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday.

DALLAS — Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to a fire at the Cornerstone Apartments on Community Drive off Northwest Highway in Dallas Thursday, officials said.

First responders reported heavy smoke coming from the two-story apartment building shortly after 2 p.m.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they observed heavy smoke coming from the two-story apartment complex, DFR said. They moved in for an offensive attack, but it wasn't long before conditions worsened and crews had to move outside and assume a defensive posture.

"Second and third alarms were eventually transmitted on the fire, resulting in the response of between 50-60 firefighters on scene to mitigate the situation," Dallas Fire-Rescue said. "Thanks to the efforts of everyone involved, to include DFR's Drone Team, crews were able to surround and drown the fire and contain it to a small area near the middle of the complex."

Firefighters worked for over two hours to extinguish the blaze, declaring an “out taps” at 4:26 p.m.

According to fire investigators, multiple possibilities related to the cause of the fire could not be ruled out; and therefore, the cause of the fire is listed as undetermined. The apartment building contained 72 units. An unknown number residents were displaced from approximately 10 to 20 apartments impacted by varying combinations of fire, smoke, water or fire operations. There were no injuries reported in association with this fire.

The American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist residents with their needs.
