DART Officer Brent Thompson was killed during an ambush in downtown Dallas.

DART Officer Brent Thompson, 43, was a father and had been married for two weeks to a fellow DART officer when he was killed. He is the first DART officer killed in the line of duty.

Thompson was remembered by his six children during a heartbreaking memorial service at The Potter's House.

The memorial was packed with officers from across Texas and the country who came to pay their respects. Thompson was a Marine and served overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan.

His widow delivered a message of strength, saying: "To the coward that tried to break me and my brothers and sisters, know that your hate made us stronger."

Thompson would have been 44 years old in a few weeks.

Dallas Police Officer Lorne Ahrens

Dallas Police Department's Sr. Cpl. Lorne Ahrens, 48, a father of two and husband to a fellow DPD detective, was affectionately called "Meat." He was remembered in a service at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano.

He had a big booming voice and a love for rock 'n roll, friends said. And as one officer put it, he was the guy you always hoped would show up as your back up because of his size.

But beneath the larger-than-life persona and intimidating cop was a husband and father of two who loved watching cartoons and wrestling around with his son and daughter.

"Lorne was passionate about police work," Officer Eddie Coffey said. "He wanted to make sure everyone was home safely. His loud voice intimidated many, but Lorne had the biggest heart and best intentions."

Rev. Rick Owen recounted the story of how Officer Lorne Ahrens met his wife, Katrina.

After the ceremony, a procession traveled from Plano to Restland Funeral Home and Cemetery on Greenville Avenue in Dallas. Hundreds lined the roads to watch.

A private funeral for Sgt. Michael Smith, 55, was held Wednesday at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church in Farmers Branch.

Sgt. Smith was married and the father of two young girls. He served as an Army ranger before becoming a Dallas officer. His sister was one of the many close to him who spoke at the funeral.

A public memorial is scheduled for Thursday at noon at Watermark Church in Dallas. WFAA will cover that public ceremony live.
