McKinney parents push school board to approve metal detectors

Parents at McKinney North High School said they planned to submit two proposals for metal detectors in the school after the death of a student earlier this month.

MCKINNEY, Texas -- Parents at McKinney North High School said they planned to submit two proposals for metal detectors in the school after the death of a student earlier this month.

The student walked into school with a loaded gun undetected and took their own life in an empty classroom.

The ensuing panic resulted in a lockdown and students were sent to another campus before being reunited with their parents.

Some of those parents now say extra security in the form of metal detectors will help prevent potential future incidents.

McKinney Parents and Students for Metal Detectors formed online hours after the June 1 incident.

To date, the group has nearly 900 members and has spent the last three weeks meeting with vendors they say could install metal detectors, and provide training and monitoring at a reduced rate for school districts.

Deanna Rosenbaum has an incoming senior next year at McKinney North.

"When it's your kid's school, I'm not sure how you process that," Rosenbaum said.

Her son, Bryce Notarte, was home from school that day, but quickly received a flood of texts, alerts and updates from his classmates.

"We still bring it up," Notarte said. "We look back on it and how crazy it actually is."

The metal detectors proposal will be submitted during public comment, and is not part of the voting agenda.

“Even though it’s summertime and clearly our kids are safe from being shot in their schools, it’s not something we can wait around and hope it’s not going to happen again," Rosenbaum said.

The next school board meeting is slated for August 28.

Classes resume in McKinney ISD on August 20.
