Chisholm Trail High School community holds memorial for student who died after collapsing during track meet

The school community organized a memorial for 16-year-old Angel Hernandez, a sophomore student who collapsed during a 5k race at a meet.

FORT WORTH, Texas — More than 100 people filled Chisholm Trail High School's Hardy Performing Arts Center Thursday night.

The school community organized a memorial for 16-year-old Angel Hernandez, a sophomore student who collapsed during a 5k race at a meet on Oct. 13. He later died in a hospital.

Hernandez collapsed shortly after crossing the finish line in one of his best races.

Hernandez’s family members attended the memorial, where the teenager’s cross country and karate coaches shared memories of the student athlete.

Joseph Gifford, the head cross country coach at Chisholm Trail High School became emotional as he recalled fond memories of Hernandez.

“He always came with a great attitude and a smile. He was just a wonderful person to be around,” Gifford said. “I’m gonna miss him, and he will be forever in my heart.”

Gifford said Hernandez had a positive influence on those around him. He shared a heartfelt story of what his team experienced following Hernandez’s sudden death. It happened as his team competed in regionals.

“I know he was there, because after we finished running, six of our seven athletes ran our season best,” Gifford said. “I know Angel was there pushing his team.”

In addition to competing on the school’s cross country team, Hernandez had a passion for karate from the age of seven.

Ashley Wood, his longtime karate coach, described him as a kind person with a lot of faith. Wood said she considered him her son.

“If you knew him, he loved you,” Wood said. “We’re a family. Angel was a large part of that glue, he was there for every kid."

Thursday, Angel’s family members told WFAA they still don’t know what exactly caused the teenager’s fatal collapse. They’re awaiting results from the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Hernandez's friends and loved ones are sharing the phrase "Live Like Angel." Their hope is to honor his life by spreading kindness.
