Arlington firefighter who was shot while conducting welfare check discharged from the hospital

The Arlington Professional Fire Fighters organization says the firefighter "has remained in good spirits and is glad to finally be at home."

ARLINGTON, Texas — An Arlington firefighter who was shot during a welfare check a week ago is home from the hospital to continue his recovery, the Arlington Professional Fire Fighters organization said Friday.

On March 22, Arlington police and the fire department conducted a welfare check at an apartment complex in the 400 block of Bardin Greene Drive. A resident called 911 and reported hearing children crying in a neighboring apartment, calling for their mother to wake up, Arlington police said.

Officers continued to knock on the door and announce themselves for more than five minutes, APD said. That's when they decided to breach the apartment “concerned that someone inside the apartment could be injured or hurt,” police said. Shortly thereafter, police say a shot fired from inside the apartment hit firefighter Brady Weaver. Weaver was then taken to a nearby hospital, where he’s been since he was discharged today.

“Despite a tremendous amount of pain since he was shot early last Friday morning while conducting a welfare check, Brady has remained in good spirits and is glad to finally be at home,” the Arlington Professional Fire Fighters’ statement said.

“I am so proud of Brady for going home today and cannot wait to see him continue to progress well in his recovery,” said Arlington Professional Fire Fighters President Jimmy Studer.

Weaver has been with the Arlington Fire Department for six years and is one of two firefighters assigned to a unit that conducts welfare checks.

Studer says the firefighter has received a lot of support this past week.

“This community has been tremendous at showing Brady their love this past week,” The officers continued to knock on the door and announce themselves for more than five minutes, APD said in its release. “From our legislative partners visiting the hospital to members in the community offering financial gifts through our 501c3 to the brand new Loews Hotel providing rooms for Brady ‘s family over the past week, we are grateful for every act of kindness our community has shown.”
