NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas — Richland Hills police officers located a stolen vehicle thanks to an innovative tool, a license plate reader camera, which alerted their department of the stolen vehicle in the area.

Four juveniles were taken into custody Tuesday afternoon after a short pursuit that ended in the 5300 block of Richland Court in North Richland Hills.

Police say an officer received a notification from a license plate reader camera indicating a stolen vehicle was in the area. When officers tried to pull the car over the driver refused to stop and gave chase through residential streets. When the driver turned into a cul-de-sac the driver and the front-seat passenger exited the car while it was moving and took off running.

"The vehicle came to a stop when it struck a nearby residence," the department said in a news release.

The were people inside the home at the time, but no one was injured.

The two passengers in the back seat attempted to run, but police immediately detained them. The driver and front passenger were taken into custody a short time later.

During the incident, Richland High School was briefly put on a shelter-in-place as a precaution.

Police are not releasing any information about the suspects due to them all being juveniles.

"Two of the juveniles were reported as a runaway and missing persons out of Fort Worth," the department said.

Police also said the vehicle was reported stolen from Fort Worth.

The suspects are facing charges including unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading and theft-possession of a stolen firearm.
