12-year-old boy accused of stealing forklift, smashing into parked cars during police chase

The chase lasted nearly an hour. Authorities believe the forklift on the middle school property was unlocked, and the keys were hidden somewhere inside the cab.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — A 12-year-old Ann Arbor boy is accused of stealing a construction vehicle earlier this weekend, and leading authorities on a chase for more than an hour.

The Ann Arbor Police Department said around 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, someone called 911 to report a teen trying to steal a forklift from the Forsythe Middle School.

Minutes later, officers spotted something out of place.

The boy was driving the forklift southbound on Brooks Street near Pear Street without any lights.

Multiple officers started chasing the young boy at speeds of 15 mph to 20 mph.

At one point during the chase, the boy struck about 10 parked cars in the Georgetown Boulevard neighborhood.

Around 7:18 p.m., officers had to call off the chase when it went across the bridge. That's when the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office picked up the pursuit and followed the driver until he pulled over around 7:53 p.m. in the area of M-14 and Gotfredson.

No one was hurt, but police said it was a very dangerous situation that could have ended badly.

The Ann Arbor Police Department said the teen got the forklift from Forsyth Middle School. The construction vehicle was apparently unlocked with the keys hidden inside the cab.
