Experts share how to handle mental health on Valentine's Day

Even the day is supposed to be filled with love, but for some, it can be filled with sadness and loneliness. Here's how experts say you can handle it.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Wednesday marks Valentine’s Day and while the day is often highlighted as a celebration of love, for some, the day can be filled with sadness and loneliness.

Experts with UofL Health said if you’re feeling down on Valentine’s Day, it’s important to take a step back and realize it’s a regular day like any other and it should not hold too much power over you.

“You can celebrate your love however and whenever you would like. If you’re a widow, or if you’ve recently lost a loved one, you can celebrate your loved ones – not just today on Valentine’s Day, but also on their birthday,” Sameera Jackson with UofL Peace Hospital said. “Do not let this holiday be like ‘oh my gosh, it’s the 14th and I don’t have anybody in my life’. Don’t let this day dictate how you are feeling.”

UofL Health also suggests thinking about other outlets of love in your life this Valentine’s Day, whether that be your family, friends or community members.
