North Texas teacher seeks to win $40,000 for classroom makeover through national contest

HALTOM CITY, Texas — A North Texas teacher is among 12 finalists in the country who could win $40,000 for a classroom makeover

Misty DeMoss from David E. Smith Elementary in Haltom City specializes in teaching students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties. Students in her classroom range from kindergarten to 5th grade. 

DeMoss applied for the furniture maker KI's second annual classroom furniture giveaway to help her classroom "be flexible and adaptable for all of her students." In order to win the giveaway, DeMoss needs people's votes. Voting for the national contest ends on Wednesday, Jan. 31, and the winner will be announced on Feb. 2.

Giving a tour of her classroom, DeMoss said she wants to create a positive and engaging environment that promotes a love for reading. DeMoss said in order to accomplish this, she intentionally chose items that would create a calming environment for reading. Here is a look at the blueprint of the proposed classroom makeover:
