QUINLAN, Texas — A Quinlan man faces a murder charge after deputies said he shot and killed a relative that they described as a "horrible and violent crime," according to the Hunt County Sheriff's office.

Deputies were called to a house around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 1200 block of Deer Lane in Quinlan, about 40 miles northeast of Dallas.

A woman called 911, saying she had been assaulted. The call abruptly ended. In a second 911 call, a caller said someone had been shot, Hunt County officials said.

Clifton Crabtree, 24, was arrested at the scene, officials said.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found a family member who was shot and was later pronounced dead at the scene.

“This was a horrible and violent crime and my thoughts and prayers are with the family. I want to commend all the officers and paramedics for all their efforts to try and save the victim," Sheriff Randy Meeks said in a written statement.

Crabtree was sent to the Hunt County Detention Center, where he's held in lieu of $1 million bail.
