Masked man points handgun at woman doing yard work, Dallas police say

There have been several reports of a masked man approaching women near their northeast Dallas homes, police said.

DALLAS — Updated at 4:07 p.m. with comments from resident.

Ashley Slocum had no idea a suspicious masked man had been roaming neighborhoods around White Rock Lake until he stood in her backyard Tuesday morning and pointed a gun at her.

Slocum was working in her front yard when she heard yelling profanities behind her house. When she went to her backyard, she encountered a masked man who pointed a handgun at her.

The man said something unintelligible, his voice muffled by a camouflage mask.

"I didn't wait around to see what he said," Slocum said. "I just turned around and started screaming my neighbor's name."

She called police around 11:15 a.m. Tuesday. Officers checked around her home on Kirkwood Drive near Norbuck Park but didn't find anyone.

Dallas police posted a "community awareness bulletin" online in January warning residents that a masked man had knocked on doors. They said Tuesday's incident may be connected to the same man.

He is described as approximately 5-foot-10, wearing a face mask and a blue T-shirt.

Slocum hadn't seen the bulletin in January but said the man who pointed a gun at her looked like the same man seen in surveillance images from the incidents earlier this year.

"The mask was exactly the same, and the build was the same too," she said.

She also said she's worried because it seems like the man is escalating and armed.

"He just seemed so calm. It was kind of creepy now that I look back on it," Slocum said.

Police said a man knocked on a door on Jan. 15 near Koko Head Circle and Easton Road. The same man is believed to have knocked on a door Jan. 18 near Groveland Drive and Tavaros Avenue.

At both times, a female resident answered the door during the day and the man made "disturbing comments," police said.

Officials urged residents to be careful answering their doors and to check who it is before opening the door. They also said if the person does not leave to call 911.

"It's scary to me this is going on and he hasn't been caught," Slocum said.

She said she is adding security to her home after the incident.
