A jury has convicted a 29-year-old man of capital murder in the robbery and killing of an elderly woman in her Dallas home.

Daniel Brooks, 29, will automatically receive a sentence of life in prison without parole in the March 2013 killing of 79-year-old Avanell Cowgill.

The jury came to its decision about 90 minutes.

It was the second time that Brooks had been tried in the case. Last June, a jury deadlocked in the case and the judge declared a mistrial.

Cowgill was beaten and strangled in her East Dallas home in March 2013. Her body was found two days later.

Brooks took Cowgill's purse and used her credit cards at various locations with an accomplice, believed to be 31-year-old David Herron.

Police identified them as suspects after tracking activity on the stolen cards and reviewing surveillance footage.
